Alfa Romeo Giulietta upgraded

Italian hatch finally gets second major makeover but there’s no more manual and prices are up

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulietta is now available in Australia, a year after the updated Series 3 five-door hatch was revealed in Europe.

The bad news is there’s no longer a sub-$30,000 manual version and prices for the two remaining six-speed TCT dual-clutch automatic variants increase by about $1000.

That means 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulietta pricing now opens at $35,950 plus on-road costs for the entry-level Super, powered by a carryover 125kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder.

And the Veloce tops the range at $42,950 plus ORCs, powered by an unchanged 177kW/340Nm 1.75-litre turbo-petrol four.

The Series 2 Veloce S Edition, just 30 of which were released last June, remains available for $45,400 plus ORCs.

The only standard paint colour is white. Adding $500 to the price are metallic hues including Alfa Red, Etna Black, Perla Moonlight, Stromboli Grey, Silverstone Grey and Anodizzato Blue.

The new Visconti Green colour available in Europe since March 2019 is not available here.

The good news is the Series 3 version of the Giulietta, which found just 169 Aussie homes last year, comes with a range of other updates.

These are led by a new 7.0-inch Alpine touch-screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, voice control, FM/AM/DAB radio and a reversing camera with dynamic gridlines.

The entry-level Giulietta Super scores added silver brightwork front and rear, 17-inch 10 twin-spoke alloy wheels, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, front fog lights and rear parking sensors.

The base-grade Giulietta also brings revised black and grey fabric seat trim with Cannelloni pattern, and the option of black, brown or leather upholstery, plus 18-inch Silver Sportiva alloys.

Other standard Super features include the LED daytime running lights, halogen headlights, honeycomb grille, black front bumper insert, chromed fog light surround, darkened headlight clusters, chromed side window surround, body-coloured side mirrors, Alfa DNA Selector, leather-clad steering wheel and shifter, chromed front door-handles and dark grey-streaked interior moulding.

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Veloce steps up with 18-inch five twin-spoke chromed/burnished alloys, launch control, red Brembo front brake callipers, launch control, sports suspension, twin oversized oval tailpipes and carbon-look bi-Xenon headlight clusters with AFLS.

Further setting it apart on the outside are front and rear bumpers with Alfa Red pinstripe detail, a sports rear diffuser, black side window surround and dark gloss front grille and fog light surrounds, wing mirrors and door-handles.
