Alfa Romeo Milano EV teased

Alfa’s first mass-produced electric car to dig deep into Stellantis parts, but new SUV should deliver best-in-class handling

The all-new 2024 Alfa Romeo Milano has been officially teased, with the Italian brand providing the first look at the all-electric SUV replacement for the MiTo hatch ahead of its full reveal on April 10.

Said to be in the final stages of testing, the Italian car-maker has released pictures of a heavily camouflaged Alfa Romeo Milano testing at the company’s Balocco proving ground.

The compact SUV will be an indirect replacement for the small hatch that was axed in Australia back in 2019.

When it arrives, Alfa says the Milano – which could quickly become the brand’s best-selling model – will deliver both “best-in-class driving dynamics” and “guarantee quick cornering with a high level of grip”.

The car-maker also claims it was developed by the same team responsible for the Alfa Romeo 4C and 8C sports cars, as well as sporty Quadrifoglio versions of the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV.

Alfa has yet to release specifications, but we already know that Milano will share plenty with both the Peugeot e-2008 and the Jeep Avenger.

It will be based on parent Stellantis’ STLA Small platform, which itself is related to the former PSA Group’s e-CMP architecture.

We can therefore expect the small Alfa to come with a 54kWh battery that will provide for a range of more than 400km.

Like the Jeep Avenger, the same platform will also spin off a mild-hybrid version that will use a 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder petrol engine.

Measuring in at about 4100mm long, 1780mm wide and 1550mm tall, the electric Milano will be the first all-wheel drive SUV on the STLA Small platform, which suggests it will produce significantly more power than the 115kW front-drive Jeep Avenger.

It’s thought that a front-drive version will also be offered.

Built at the same factory in Poland as the Jeep Avenger, Alfa Romeo is banking on the new Milano to account for around 40 per cent of its global volume when it goes on sale later this year.

A fast Quadrifoglio version is expected later.

Following confirmation that the Jeep Avenger will be launched in Australia in the second half of 2024, the Alfa Romeo Milano is expected to follow sometime next year.
