All-electric Mahindra SUVs to crack 200km/h

Double-tonne top speed teased in new video for all three incoming SUVs that will employ VW motors and BYD batteries

Mahindra has released a new video teaser showing its incoming XUV.e8, XUV.e9 and BE.05 electric SUVs testing and suggested they will be capable of a 200km/h top speed, with a close-up of the speedo showing one of the three SUVs topping out at the double-tonne.

Mahindra hasn’t specified which of the three SUVs hit 200km/h, nor explicitly detailed whether or not the production models will be capable of travelling that fast, but if any of them do they will be faster than many of their rivals that limit top speed to between 160-180km/h to preserve driving range, focus on low-speed acceleration and keep key EV hardware like motors cool.

The new Mahindra XUVe.8, XUV.e9 and BE.05 were previewed as concepts last year and all three new electric SUVs will share the Indian car-maker’s new ‘Heatcore’ design language.

Mahindra has now also previewed the full digital instrument cluster of the production vehicles and revealed there will be a dedicated Sport mode for enthusiastic driving.

The earlier concepts suggested a larger central touch-screen will also be fitted, alongside a new head-up display for the driver.

Based on Mahindra’s all-new ‘Inglo’ EV architecture, all three electric SUVs will be available with single or dual motors, including an 80kW unit up front sourced from Volkswagen.

On the rear axle there will be either a 170kW Valeo motor or VW’s latest 210kW electric motor.

Instead of buying batteries from Volkswagen as originally rumoured, Mahindra has locked in a supply deal with emerging Chinese car-maker BYD.

The first Mahindra EV to be released in India will be the XUV.e8, following its debut in December 2024. Next up will be the XUV.e9 in April 2025, followed by the BE.05 in October 2025.

Just last month the Mahindra Thar.e concept was revealed as the company’s vision for a battery-electric off-roader by Mahindra Automotive president Veejay Nakra, who previously told carsales that all of the brand’s upcoming EVs could be sold in Australia – eventually.
