Mercedes-Benz chief designer Gorden Wagener has released the first teaser images of the Mercedes Vision AMG concept – an “all-electric performance showcar” that’s expected to preview Mercedes-AMG’s first dedicated electric model – ahead of its world debut on May 19.
Anticipated by some to be a battery-powered successor for the long-overdue Mercedes-AMG ONE hybrid hypercar, the production version of the Vision AMG will
be launched in 2025 – perfectly in line with Mercedes-Benz’s cut-off date for combustion-powered model development.“Next week, we will show what we think the electric performance world will look like when it's made by AMG,” Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius said in the report.
“That’s hot off the press for you today, so stay tuned for some announcements that we will make next week.
“We will give you a glimpse of AMG performance as all-electric.”
Details on the concept for AMG’s performance flagship EV remain predictably all but non-existent, but the teaser does at least confirm the supercar or hypercar intentions of the vehicle, which appears to feature what would traditionally be described as a mid-engine layout.
The preliminary Vision AMG teaser shows a long and low vehicle with tapered front and rear ends, plus more than a few svelte curves and what we expect to be a full-width rear lighting signature.
Set to ride on a dedicated performance EV platform, the production version of the new Vision concept will no doubt pack a serious performance punch given the current Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4Matic+’s dual-motor EV powertrain dishes out up to 560kW/1020Nm … and it’s not even a flagship AMG 63 variant.
Given the Mercedes-AMG ONE’s Formula 1-based 1.6-litre V6 hybrid powertrain produces a massive 746kW, it’s more than likely its all-electric successor will offer up even more performance, potentially allowing it to mix it with EV monsters like the Rimac Nevera, Lotus Evija and future Bugatti products.
Another Mercedes-AMG hypercar beyond the long-awaited ONE has been on the cards for a while now, with Mercedes-AMG chief technical officer Jochen Hermann confirming back in September that there was still plenty of appetite for such a car, even after the ONE’s difficult gestation.
