The new-generation 2024 BMW 5 Series Touring has made its long-awaited global debut in both internal-combustion and battery-electric i5 form, however only the flagship EV-powered i5 Touring will be offered in Australia at launch.
Destined to arrive on local soil during the third quarter of this year, the 2024 BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring will start from $219,900 plus on-road costs – attracting a $4000 premium over the equivalent sedan variant.
The new Touring rides on the same 2995mm wheelbase as the BMW 5 Series sedan but has a bigger and more practical load area, holding up to 570 litres with the 40/20/40-split folding rear seats in place (sedan: 520L) – and 1700L when they’re stowed.
While a broad range of ICE and hybrid powertrains are available overseas, BMW Australia has opted to launch only with the flagship EV.
As with the sedan, the M60 xDrive Touring features twin e-motors that produce 442kW/820Nm combined, enabling the fast AWD wagon to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.9sec (sedan: 3.8sec).
That makes for a striking comparison with the recently launched Audi RS 6 Avant Performance (from $251,000 plus ORCs), which uses a 463kW/850Nm twin-turbo V8 and stops the clock at 3.4sec in the sprint to 100km/h.
It’s also sure to be cross-shopped with the just-revealed new 2024 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo (from $198,000).
The i5 M60 Touring’s top speed is capped at 230km/h while the 85kWh lithium-ion battery pack will provide a maximum driving range of up to 506km.
The battery can be charged at up to 205kW with DC power, or up to 22kW on AC.
As with all BMW EVs, Australian buyers are given a complimentary five-year Chargefox subscription at the time of purchase.
Being an M Performance model, the i5 M60 xDrive Touring also comes with an arsenal of go-faster goodies including adaptive M dampers, active roll stabilisation and comfort, rear air suspension, M Sport brakes, Integral Active Steering, sport seats and 20-inch M alloy wheels.
Other standard equipment highlights include a fixed glass roof, carbon-fibre interior trim, BMW CraftedClarity Glass switchgear, heated and cooled front seats, four-zone climate control, adaptive LED headlights, ambient interior lighting, wireless phone charging, a 17-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, Merino leather upholstery, BMW Operating System 8.5 and BMW Live Cockpit Professional.
Nine metallic and one non-metallic paint colours are included in the price, however three Individual paint finishes are optional at $2400 (Tanzanite Blue) or $5000 (Frozen Pure Grey and Frozen Deep Grey).
There’s also a $2700 Comfort Package (heated steering wheel, rear sun blinds, front Comfort seats and rear seat heating) and a $3000 M Sport Plus bundle that combines various M aesthetic treatments with 21-inch BMW Individual black aero-honed wheels.
