All-new 2024 MG HS hits showrooms

Second-generation medium SUV is bigger, more sophisticated and better value

The new-generation 2024 MG HS has landed on Aussie soil priced from $33,990 drive-away, with the all-new line-up comprising three variants from launch, however there are plenty more to come.

That sharp opening price tag predictably applies to base Vibe 1.5T and marks a very palatable $1000 increase over the previous version, rising to $36,990 drive-away for the mid-range Excite 1.5T and topping out at $40,990 drive-away for the flagship Essence 1.5T.

Flagship is a loose term in this context seeing as there’ll be hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains added to the portfolio in the first half of next year, inevitably driving up the asking prices compared to this budget-friendly turbo-petrol option.

Said turbo-petrol is a heavily revised version of the previous HS’ force-fed 1.5-litre four-cylinder mill, now good for a heartier 125kW/275Nm – up from 119kW/250 – courtesy of a new turbocharger, intercooler, variable valve timing and flywheel.

The new set-up is said to offer less turbo lag than before while being more efficient (6.9L/100km) and powerful, helped in its endeavours by an all-new (wet clutch) seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The new drive system and its elevated outputs are warranted seeing as the new HS is significantly bigger than its predecessor, measuring 4655mm long (+81mm), 1890mm wide (+14mm), 1655mm tall and 2765mm between the axles (+45mm).

All that extra length has seen boot space grow to 507 litres (+44L) behind the rear seats and 1484 litres (+197L) when they’re folded flat.

That MG3-inspired body sits atop an all-new platform intended to deliver ‘Euro-like’ handling, with the whole ensemble said to be stiffer and more rigid than the previous model while offering a more sophisticated ride-handling balance.

Inside the cabin you’ll find the steering wheel out of the MG4 along with a pair of 12.3-inch screens – one infotainment, one digital instrument cluster – with privacy tint and not too much else since the HS continues the industry trend of bundling most functions into the infotainment system.

Equipment highlights on the base Vibe 1.5T include 18-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, manual air-conditioning, keyless entry and start, smartphone mirroring, a six-speaker sound system, reversing camera, power-adjustable driver’s seat, fabric upholstery, adaptive cruise control and the full suite of MG Pilot safety gear.

The Excite 1.5T rolls on bigger 19-inch hoops and adds satellite navigation, PVC upholstery, front fog lights, a 360-degree camera and compatibility with MG’s new iSmart connect services.

At the top of the tree, the Essence 1.5T flaunts a wireless charging pad, eight-speaker sound system, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors, rear privacy glass, door mirror and driver’s seat memory functions, power-adjustable passenger seat, heated front seats, glasses box and a panoramic sunroof.

Six colours – all metallic – are available: Cashmere Silver, Lunar Grey, Arctic Blue, Diamond Red, Black Pearl and Pearl White.

Every grade is front-drive, requires 95RON at the minimum and covered by MG’s new industry-leading 10-year/250,000km warranty.
