After months of cryptic teasers and speculation, Alfa Romeo has finally revealed the name of its all-new baby SUV – Milano – and confirmed the upcoming light SUV will be unveiled in April 2024.
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Milano’s teaser campaign has had us scratching our heads for months now, with several cryptic teasers and trademark applications initially pointing to ‘Visconti’ and, more recently, ‘Brennero’.
Turns out we were thinking too hard about this all along: the teased serpent of Visconti is the emblem of Milan, while the referenced (via co-ordinates) Brenner Pass is a major trade link between the famous city and Innsbruck.
Other co-ordinates used in the Brennero teaser referenced various sites and landmarks around Milan, all of which now makes sense.
“Alfa Romeo has chosen a name with a strong historical value for the brand’s first Sport Urban Vehicle, faithful to its sporting DNA, which will also be available in a 100 per cent electric version,” said Alfa.
Like the closely-related Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600e, the Milano will be offered with a small-capacity petrol engine and battery-electric powertrain, the latter of which will be the flagbearer for the spiritual successor the discontinued Mito hatchback, positioned below the Alfa Romeo Tonale small SUV.
Details are yet to be confirmed but the specifications of the Jeep and Fiat largely tell us all we need to know – the EV version will be good for about 115kW/260Nm and 400km of range thanks to a single electric motor and 54kWh battery pack.
The internal combustion versions, meantime, will almost certainly feature a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine outputting 74kW/205Nm, driving the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission which, as in the EV, sends all of its drive to the front wheels.
Given Alfa’s rich heritage of producing attractive and sporty vehicles, you can expect the Milano to feature one of the most exotic designs, sportiest interiors and most athletic chassis tunes in its salessegment, all of which could contribute to higher prices.
“With the arrival of Milano in 2024, Alfa Romeo completes a line-up capable of meeting the desires of all our enthusiasts and much more,” said Alfa Romeo CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato.
“Milano is intended as a symbolic ‘welcome back’ to all our Alfisti fans. As owners of the Giulietta and Mito, they have been waiting to confirm their love for Alfa Romeo.
“It also serves as a ‘welcome’ to anyone looking for a unique sporting experience in this segment and the distinctive beauty of Italian design.”
Chances are the Milano will make it to Australia, given Alfa’s current expansion moves locally and the growth of the smallest SUV segment, which is led by the Mazda CX-3 but also includes the Volkswagen T-Cross, Toyota Yaris Cross and, soon, the Ford Puma EV and perhaps an all-new cut-price EV from Toyota.
