All-new BMW 5 Series list prices

BMW's new 5 Series range will offer more equipment, power and economy but at lower prices than the current generation

The all-new sixth generation BMW 5 Series will reach Australian dealerships on June 3 2010, with a trio of models on offer.

Kicking off the range at $99,900 is the BMW 528i, powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. This compares well to the current $116,824 price of the equivalent 530i.

Above the 528i is the 535i, a more powerful, twin-turbo version of the inline six-cylinder engine, which fetches $128,900, while the range topping twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder 550i starts at $178,900. The latter two models are also equipped with eight-speed gearboxes.

The Carsales Network has already test driven the new 5 Series in Europe, and first impressions of the new model are positive. After the June 2010 launch of the abovementioned petrol-powered models, the BMW 520d turbodiesel model will arrive in September, which will then become the entry-level model with a price point of $83,300.

"The new BMW 5 Series Sedan represents a dramatic advancement in the evolution of the world's best luxury executive sedan," said BMW Group Australia Managing Director, Stavros Yallouridis.

"With its stunning contemporary design, trademark BMW driving dynamics, powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines an extensive array of luxury features and advanced technologies, the new 5 Series Sedan has moved forward in every way," added Yallouridis.

Standard features across the 2010 BMW 5 Series range include fine Dakota leather upholstery, keyless start, cruise control with brake function, front and rear parking sensors, multi-zone climate control, wood trim, Head-Up Display, an anti-dazzle interior mirror, four-way electric adjustment for the driver and front passenger seats, automatic lights and windscreen wipers, a premium CD audio system with USB interface plus satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.

Safety features are likewise impressive, with six airbags, dynamic stability control, active front headrests, active bonnet pedestrian protection plus ABS with cornering brake control and brake assist.

All petrol models add xenon headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels, (19-inch rims for the 550i models) and BMW will offer a range of optional features such as active cruise control with stop & go function, BMW Night Vision, an automatic parking system and surround view cameras.

Four engine types will be offered by September, all of which drive the rear wheels, beginning with the entry-level 520d, a 2.0-litre turbodiesel outputting 135kW/380Nm and using a claimed 5.2 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres travelled.

Next in line is the BMW 528i, featuring a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol powerplant generating 190kW/310Nm and returning economy of 8.0L/100km in combined-cycle testing.

The 535i's twin-turbo (TwinPower in BMW speak) 3.0-litre six yields an impressive 225kW/400Nm for a combined-cycle fuel consumption figure of 8.4L/100km. It'll sprint from zero to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds.

Topping the range, the BMW 550i develops a very serious 300kW/600Nm from its twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine. The zero to 100km/h sprint is dispatched in five seconds flat, and fuel economy is rated at 10.4L/100km.

BMW 528i  - $99,900
