All-new electric MG hatch teased

Fresh Chinese budget EV tipped to wear MG4 nameplate when it’s revealed in the fourth quarter of 2022

MG Motor has previewed an all-new compact electric car ahead of its debut in the fourth quarter of this year via an elegant teaser video posted to its European media site and social media channels.

Measuring 4300mm long and awash with curvaceous lines headlined by a full-width rear lighting signature and gently sloping roofline, MG says the all-new model was “developed with the European consumer in mind” but has released no further details.

However, given the unnamed EV is similar in length to the MG ZS small SUV and European reports insist it will be a small hatchback called the MG4, we expect it to slot between the popular but aged MG3 light hatch and the upcoming MG5 small hatch, which will be joined by the MG5 Electric wagon.

As a direct rival for small EVs like the Nissan LEAF, plus the Volkswagen ID.3, Cupra Born and ORA Good Cat (all of which are expected on sale in Australia at some point), the MG4 would become MG’s fourth EV in Europe, joining the MG5 wagon, Marvel R medium SUV and MG ZS EV, a facelifted version of which is due on sale here imminently.

Expect the MG4 to come with a similar EV powertrain to the MG 5 Electric, meaning a circa-115kW front-mounted motor powered by a 57.7kWh battery, providing 0-100km/h acceleration in about seven seconds and a range of around 400km.

Other key features based on the teaser video include aggressively-styled 17-inch alloy wheels and black wing mirrors, cladding and window trim, along with an orange hero colour and bold rear lighting arrangement.

With a raft of new MG EVs planned, it’s also likely this new model could debut MG’s latest and future-proof EV platform.

MG Australia told carsales it was too early to comment on the possibility of a local introduction for the MG4, but given the brand’s mantra of ‘Electric for everyone’ we would imagine the new model is in with a pretty good shout Down Under.

If so, the MG4 could undercut the circa-$45K MG ZS EV and BYD Atto 3 as Australia’s cheapest EV.
