The latest model to be revealed under the One Ford strategy, the all-new Transit, will be the realisation of the company’s long-held dream to have a single, global platform for all its commercial vans.
The new Transit made its debut in Hanover this week and will be introduced to European and US markets before the end of the year. Ford says it will be available in a “huge” range of body styles and derivatives that will replace existing models such as the two-tonne Euro Transit and North America’s E-Series. With styling cues taken from Ford’s latest passenger cars, the new Transit is a good deal more contemporary than outgoing models. A gaping mouth below a narrow grille flanked by curvaceous wrap-around headlights dominates the front end, while driver vision is improved by larger glass areas. Ford says the Transit is targeting best in class fuel economy and load capacity, and offers “exceptional toughness and durability.”
According to Ford of Europe vice president of product development Barb Samardzich (pictured with the show's award for 'International Van of the Year'), “The Transit van is going global, and we’ve made it more productive, more fuel efficient and tougher than ever before.”
The Transit’s new global platform will underpin the next generation of Ford commercial vans to be rolled out in Europe over the next two years. The new model was engineered in Ford’s commercial vehicle Centre of Excellence in Europe and joins the new one-tonne Transit Custom variant.
It offers what Ford claims is a best-in-class payload, and brings an average load space increase of around 10 per cent, as well as more cabin space for driver and passengers. The cabin is described as “significantly” more spacious, with increased shoulder and headroom, improved visibility and a more comfortable driving position augmented by a fully adjustable steering column.
Among the variants will be a new SuperJumbo cab-chassis capable of handling five-metre floats or box bodies. The largest van will take on board as much as 15.1 cubic metres of cargo. Ford also says the new Transit has been designed with body builders, upfitters and camper van conversions in mind.
European models will be powered by Ford’s 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel in three power ratings - 76kW, 93kW and 116kW – and the choice of front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Standard transmission is a six-speed manual.
Body styles include van, double cab-in-van, Kombi, Kombi van and bus, plus cab-chassis and chassis-cowl variants. Three different lengths and the choice of two roof heights will be available.
Passenger car style options will include voice activated in-car connectivity, Ford’s Emergency Assistance system, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning.
