All-new Merc E-Class exposed

Mercedes-Benz's all-new mid-sizer has been revealed ahead of schedule

Mercedes-Benz's E-Class has been exposed ahead of schedule via these leaked images, which have appeared on Merc's own German website, as well as a host of other motoring sites around the world.

The pics reveal the new W212 model has inherited much of the design language debuted by the current-generation S-Class -- the big difference is at the rear, which on the E-Class is adorned by an XXL tail-light cluster.

The new E retains the four-eyed look of the past two generations, but the round headlights have made way for trapezoidal units. As per the Audi design manual, up-spec models will be distinguished by LED daytime running lights.

Due to make its public debut at next March's Geneva motor show, the next-gen E-Class is expected here in mid-2009.

Euro reports suggest the new model is 70mm longer than the existing E, and the added length is in the interests of greater crash safety and more generous rear legroom.

Manufacturing costs have reportedly been pared by 25 per cent, but the new model's pricing is not expected to reflect this. If anything, pricing may rise slightly due to the weak Australian dollar.

As per the C-Class, the petrol engine line-up will kick off with a 122kW 1.8-litre supercharged engine, and above this will be trio of V6s displacing 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 litres.

UK's Autocar magazine suggests the E-Class line-up will also include the E450 and E500, powered by 4.6- and 5.5-litre V8s with 254kW and 290kW respectively.

However, these engines will be interim offerings before upgraded versions with direct injection and twin turbos debut in 2011, according to Autocar.

The E-class will be offered with either rear-wheel drive or Mercedes' 4-Matic four-wheel-drive system, but the latter will be targeted primarily at snowbound countries.

New safety features will include an upgraded night vision system and a new fatigue detection device dubbed Attention Assist.

The new E-Class will add depth to a premium mid-size sector that's been invigorated in recent times by a refreshed Audi A6, as well as the advent of the Jaguar XF.

Also waiting in the wings is BMW's next-generation 5 Series, which is codenamed 'F10'. It will replace the current E60 5 Series, which has been on sale here since 2004.
