The car that started the obsession with the so-called four-door 'coupe' is set to be re-born. The second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS (captured here by Carparazzi's spy photographers) is expected to be launched late next year before going on sale early in 2011.
Given that the current CLS shares the same platform as the E-Class range, it is almost certain the same new mechanicals that underpin the recently launched new sedan will sit equip the second-generation CLS. That means you can expect the same upgraded chassis and suspension found on the E-Class sedan (see more here).
Our spy shots show the car in heavy disguise but it is still possible to make out a number of the changes to the new CLS. Headlighs, rear lights, side mirrors and roofline suggest the car will retain its familiar silhouette, but the rectangular tailpipes and cladding in the doors and boot indicate there will be a number of design cues carried over from new E-Class. The large badge on the grille points to a look similar to the E-Class Coupe.
Thrust is expected to come from a wide range of sources -- petrol, petrol turbo and turbodiesel engines. The flagship CLS, however, could well be a BlueHybrid model that will use the same diesel-hybrid powerplant and S400 BlueHybrid and upcoming green E-Class model.
Expect an AMG too as at this stage, the tuning house will be building a full-house two-door E-Class AMG coupe.
Having pioneered the four-door 'coupe', the CLS has come under increasing attack from rival brands quick to cash in on the concept. With the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide, Audi A7 and other similar cars all expected to be in the market by 2011/12, there is plenty of pressure on the CLS.
