The small SUV that’s almost certain to replace the popular Mitsubishi ASX in Australia has been teased in action ahead of its reveal at the Indonesian motor show in mid-August.
The teaser takes the form of a 30-second video posted to YouTube today, showcasing the new-generation small SUV’s bold exterior angles, light signatures, tech-savvy interior and all-weather capabilities.
Both the exterior and interior designs of the vehicle were previewed as far back as October last year, when Mitsubishi debuted the XFC Concept, with many of the same features – lights, dual-screen cockpit, dash layout etc – appearing on the production vehicle.
Other standout features we can see include a Yamaha sound system, haptic infotainment controls and four drive modes including a bespoke ‘Wet’ mode designed for use on flooded roads, plus a claimed 222mm of ground clearance.
Company executives have long said the XFC previewed an all-new compact SUV aimed squarely at ASEAN markets (which include Australia), and now Mitsubishi Australia has declared it’s “working closely with MMC on the future model portfolio” and “the small SUV segment where ASX has been a stalwart”.
“MMAL will confirm its plans in due course,” the local division said in a press release today.
Odds are the new model will indeed be badged and sold Down Under as the second-generation ASX, in an attempt the leverage what’s been an incredibly popular nameplate with local consumers for more than a decade now.
We know for sure an X will feature somewhere in the nomenclature because of its repeated appearances throughout the teaser clip, not to mention the letter’s role as the anchor character of the current nameplate.
But while it’s like the ASX nameplate will adorn the back of the new model Down Under, it shouldn’t be confused with the second-gen Mitsubishi ASX being produced and sold in Europe, which is a rebadged Renault Captur – just as the reborn Mitsubishi Colt (also not offered here) is a badge-engineered Renault Clio.
“In developing the all-new compact SUV, we enhanced road performance through repeated testing in Japan on a course that mirrored the road conditions of the ASEAN region, as well as thorough, extensive road testing in the region itself,” said Mitsubishi Motors chief product specialist Masahiro Ito
An August reveal for the new model points to an early 2024 introduction for the Australian market, if and when the new model is given the greenlight for local release.
