All-new Toyota FJ Cruiser teased
If you think the new Prado looks like an FJ Cruiser, Toyota has just teased its next short-wheelbase 4x4The all-new 2024 Toyota Prado revealed yesterday has already melted the internet, particularly over its boxy styling that many, many observers are describing – for better or worse – as looking like an FJ Cruiser.
But Toyota has also now heralded what looks to be the next-generation FJ Cruiser, using the unveiling of the Prado in the US – where it will be called the Toyota LandCruiser – to show off a dark silhouette of a rugged new short-wheelbase 4x4 off-roader.
What’s more, at the same time the American arm of the Japanese auto giant also presented a darkened image of an all-new, all-electric family SUV and an off-road battery-powered scooter.
Toyota executives did not elaborate on what each of the shadowy profile images depicts, but the FJ Cruiser shot leaves little to the imagination, closely resembling the 2021 Toyota Compact Cruiser EV.
The EV concept clearly also guided the styling of the new Toyota Prado and the related Lexus GX, but there’s room for a LandCruiser Shorty that will serve as a spiritual successor – if not a direct replacement – for the FJ Cruiser that was built from 2006 and 2022.
The Compact Cruiser EV concept does differ from this production-oriented teaser image in that it looks like the Japanese car-maker has upsized the 4x4 wagon to sit on the same TNGA-F ladder-frame chassis as both the LandCruiser 300 Series and latest Prado 250 Series.
It’s sure to be pitched as a more rugged alternative to the Prado and LandCruiser, rock-hopping its way into territory occupied by the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.
The other unseen SUV teased by Toyota USA is tipped to be a flagship battery-electric LandCruiser that sports far sleeker looks to maximise its driving range.
Instead of off-road prowess, the zero-emissions LandCruiser is expected to major in space and comfort and offer room for up to eight occupants, plus their luggage.
The final teaser involves an electric scooter that features two wheels at the front and a single wheel at the rear, which could also offered as an official LandCruiser-branded accessory.
