The next-generation 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan has been leaked online months ahead of its official global reveal and roughly a year before its Australian launch.
An initial batch of images showing off the new model’s exterior and cockpit was posted to the MQB-Coding & Retrofit Facebook page overnight, before a second batch emerged on the Cochespias forum page hours later, including close-ups of the all-new mid-size SUV’s cabin.
The leaked images reaffirm what we already know from the myriad rounds of spy imagery carsales has obtained over the past year or so, as well as the official teaser in June – that the new Tiguan will adopt a far more rounded, VW ID.4-inspired aesthetic and feature a tech-heavy interior design.
VW’s current routine of releasing core vehicle details well ahead of time and in tandem with official images of camouflaged pre-production vehicles seems to have paid off because there isn’t anything groundbreaking to report in terms of the new Tiguan’s styling or cabin layout.
The only previously unseen feature is the full-width rear lighting signature and matching styling element, which looks to have been pinched off the smaller Volkswagen T-Cross.
We haven’t seen this particular layout on any of the European or US spy images and the camo wrap of the official teaser obscured pretty much everything besides the outside extremities.
The new arrangement adds a fresh sense of unity and uniformness to Volkswagen’s SUV portfolio given the ID.4, ID.5, T-Cross, Touareg and now the Tiguan all feature a similar tail-light design and more rounded bodies.
Due in Australia in the second half of next year, the new-generation Tiguan is underpinned by the same MQB Evo architecture as the Mk8 VW Golf, Audi A3, Skoda Octavia, VW Caddy and Cupra Formentor, which in turn better lends itself to electrified powertrains.
Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid systems are all set to feature somewhere along the lines, with the PHEV said to be good for up to 100km of electric range.
The new model is 31mm longer than its predecessor – despite sharing its wheelbase – and will feature a repackaged interior to yield an extra 33 litres of boot space behind the rear seats, elevating the boot capacity to 648L.
The all-new interior will be headlined by a 15-inch touch-screen (variant dependent) run by a new-generation operation system promising crisper graphics and faster processing, as well as housing all the usual infotainment goodies and the climate controls.
