Almost 17,000 BMW X5 and X6 models recalled
Risk of fire for older BMW SUV models due to wiring harness deteriorationBMW Australia has announced a nationwide recall for a total of 16,850 examples of the BMW X5 and BMW X6, covering model years 2007 to 2010, which could be subject to a fire risk.
Vehicles affected by the recall, which includes both E70 BMW X5 and E71 BMW X6 models, are said to have been sold in Australia between January 1, 2007 and August 31, 2010, and could catch fire if parts of the wiring harness deteriorate over time.
According to the recall notice, the plug connection from the wiring harness to the blower controller may deteriorate over time, potentially causing the plug-in contact to “short circuit or overheat”.
BMW says if the plug-in contact short circuits or overheats, this may cause a fire, which increases the risk of an accident, serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.
The German car-maker says it will contact known owners to organise an inspection and repair where needed. Alternatively, owners can contact their local BMW service centre or call 1800 813 299 to arrange an inspection.
