Alpina teases 285kW all-wheel drive diesel super sedan

Alpina has teased an all-new performance diesel sedan based on the BMW 5 Series.

The single pic of a dashboard featuring a 'D5 S' inscription confirms the famous German tuner is developing a new diesel performance flagship.

Headline news is the diesel will be offered in both left-hand drive and right-hand drive markets, opening up the opportunity for the D5 S to be sold in Australia.

Unfortunately, for undisclosed reasons, only the D5 S sedan will be made in right-hand-drive – left-hand-drive markets will also be offered a wagon derivative.

Whatever side the steering model sits, all versions of Alpina’s D5 S will be all-wheel drive.

But, right-hand drive models miss the full 285kW/800Nm version of the twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six sold in European markets which propels the mid-size sedan to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds and onto a maximum 286km/h.

Instead, the cars we could potentially see here deliver 240kW/700Nm. Still enough for a rapid 0-100km/h sprint of just 4.9 seconds and a 275km/h top speed.

But here’s the hook: Despite all that performance, the Alpina D5 S claims average fuel consumption of 6.6L/100km and exhaust emissions of 174g/km of CO2.

Expect the muscly version of the diesel 5 Series to score the body kit and 20-inch alloy wheels of the B5 Bi-turbo petrol.

Alpina is expected to begin teasing more pics of the D5 S in the lead up to its launch in a few weeks.
