If so, opportunity knocks between November 28 and December 2 at The Legends Bar, located within Melbourne's Etihad Stadium. It's the inaugural VSR Showdown, a virtual motor sports event pitting pro race drivers against SIM racers and raw, new talent – the latter emerging from four days of competition to earn their spots.
It all comes to a head on Saturday December 2 when the field of 27 drivers (nine each from the pro racers, SIM racers and new talents) compete in four elimination rounds to determine the three-driver field to contest the feature-length final race.
The winner pockets $2000.
But be prepared for some pressure; a crowd of 800 spectators is expected to watch the action live in a ‘Grand Tour' type of arena and the races will be televised on big screens within the venue (content coming from static and roaming cameras, GoPros and HD webcams from the simulators, all accompanied by live commentary). The racing will be streamed live online and a 22-minute television show will be broadcast on TV.
Competitors will use the MP6-VR motion simulator by Motum Simulation, claimed to be unique in offering six-axis motion and VR capability. It provides up to 30-degrees of pitch and roll, up to 45-degrees of yaw, 400mm of lateral and longitudinal travel and 380mm of vertical travel.
The MP6-VR can replicate a variety of race cars, from Formula Ford to F1 and is used by Red Bull Racing Australia. Supercars champion Jamie Whincup said: "The Motum Simulator felt incredibly realistic, with good feedback through the steering wheel and pedals."
Software is Project CARS 2, offering a massive selection of race circuits, five different motorsport disciplines, 29 racing series and 180 cars. The VSR Showdown has been officially endorsed by Project CARS 2 as an eSports event.
Among the lineup of professional racers signed-up to do battle are: James Pettigrew (Mad Cow Racing), Daniel Holland (Team Redline), Emily Jones (Transman Racing), Trent Harrison (Formula Ford), James Allen (ELMS-LMP2) and Fraser Ross (GT3).
