Amazon orders 100,000 electric vans from Rivian

Pure-electric start-up scores big order from online shopping behemoth that also co-owns a large chunk of the car-maker

Online retail giant Amazon has followed up its $A1 billion investment in Rivian by placing an order for 100,000 battery-powered vans with the pure-electric ute and SUV start-up.

The order, announced on the weekend, is said to be the single largest ever order for an electric delivery van and will see the first Rivian-built vans delivered to the e-commerce site from 2021.

By 2022, Rivian says it will have delivered 10,000 vans to Amazon and by 2030 all 100,000 delivery trucks will be in operation.

According to Amazon, the decision to place the order with the zero-emission US car-maker follows the recent Climate Pledge it announced to the markets that it will reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Amazon said it hopes its early billion-dollar investment will help "accelerate the production of electric vehicles critical to reducing emissions from transportation."

Despite the announcement of the new six-figure Amazon order, Rivian has released no details on the new van, except posting a teasing picture of the battery-powered delivery vehicle it plans to make.
