AMG power for Aston Martin

New engines and electrical architecture to evolve from Aston-AMG partnership
Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG have announced a technical partnership that will see the German performance company supply engine and electrical technology to the British sports car maker.
Daimler’s performance subsidiary has signed a letter of intent with the UK-based company and both parties say they are “working towards signing definitive agreements before the end of the year”, provided that regulatory approvals are met.
Under the proposal, Aston Martin would gain access to Mercedes-AMG’s and Mercedes-Benz Car’s considerable engineering resources, which in turn would allow it to develop new V8 engines and new electrical architecture for its next-generation sports cars.
In return, Daimler will take a five per cent stake in Aston Martin Lagonda, joining Aston Martin’s existing shareholders including Investment DAR, Investindustrial and Adeem Investment in what the company has described as “an essential element” of the brand’s future.
“We have selected AMG specifically as the basis for this powertrain development process,” said Aston Martin Product Development Director, Ian Minards.
“Aston Martin sources cutting-edge technology from key suppliers around the globe and the opportunity to include content from Mercedes-AMG GmbH in our next-generation sports cars is, clearly, good news.”
For his part, Head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH Ola Källenius said: “We are proud to work with Aston Martin and provide them with powertrain and e/e components for their forthcoming sports cars. This is proof of AMG’s technological and performance expertise and a real win/win situation for both sides.”
Aston Martin celebrates its centenary this year but is reported to have been struggling financially in recent times. In its home market, it sold 2340 units between January and September last year (2012) which represents a 19 per cent year-on-year fall.
In Australia, the luxury sports car brand has sold 48 vehicles in the first half of this year – 12 more than the same period in 2012.
