ANCAP, the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme, has posted crash safety test results for three cars relatively new to the local market.
All three, the Renault Clio, Mazda6 and Kia Rondo, obtained a five-star mark from the crash safety authority, but the Kia was the only car of the three to top 36 points – with an overall tally of 36.2.
Neither the Mazda nor the Renault was far off however, with Mazda's mid-size car notching up 35.44 out of a possible score of 37. And the diminutive Renault improved on that, with its figure of 35.87.
"We make no secret of the fact that we are aiming for five-star safety across the Kia range," Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer, Tony Barlow said. "We have made the commitment that all new Kia models in Australia will have the five-star rating and with the Rondo we continue to honour that commitment."
And the Rondo's result may add further impetus to Kia's drive for five-star safety across the board, which will ultimately extend to the brand's four-star Carnival – another people mover – when the current model is replaced late next year.
"The Rondo performed well in all tests, including whiplash testing, and it is pleasing to see that advanced seatbelt reminders are standard for all seats, including the third row," said ANCAP Chairman Lauchlan McIntosh, as quoted in a press release.
