Google has announced it has upgraded its Android Auto in-car infotainment system with fresh apps that are designed to keep drivers informed and entertained on the move.
The headline news is the addition of Zoom, Vivaldi, Prime Video and the Weather Network, all of which will expand both Android Auto and Google Built-In usefulness for drivers.
The new apps went live on September 14 and are all tailored for car use. Zoom, for example, will be audio-only to make it easy and safe to join a conference call without increasing the risk of driver distraction.
Another handy arrival is the Weather Channel app that provides hourly forecasts and help drivers track incoming storms.
Once parked up safely, or charging if it’s an electric vehicle, Android Auto will also offer users Amazon Prime Video that will allow them to stream videos.
Initially, Google Built-In is adding the streaming service for Renault, Polestar and Volvo vehicles but it is expected to be rolled out to more car-makers shortly.
The launch of Vivaldi, meanwhile, is a new Google-based web browser designed for those who want to browse the web using a touch-screen within a car.
Finally, Google says it will also roll out its digital car key, allowing owners to lock, unlock and start their vehicles by using only their smartphone.
Currently, the key is available on some Hyundai, Genesis and Kia models in the US and Canada.
