Toyota Australia has confirmed a second batch of Toyota GR Yaris vehicles are now available to order via dealers, following the sell-out success of the first 1000 examples.
The initial batch of 200kW turbocharged all-wheel drive hot hatches was sold out within seven days of going on sale online last Wednesday (September 23) at a special price of $39,950 drive-away.
Now Toyota has announced a further 100 examples for pre-sale at a new drive-away price of $44,950, which is also well below the official recommended retail price of $49,500 (plus on-road costs).
That’s what enthusiasts are expected to pay for the first all-Toyota sports car in 20 years (the Toyota GR Supra is based on the BMW Z4) after the first 1100 examples are spoken for.
Toyota Australia vice-president of sales and marketing Sean Hanley said the response was phenomenal to the Japanese car-maker’s first homologation model for World Rally Championship competition since the end of production of the Celica GT-Four in 1999.
“We deliberately set out to make GR Yaris attainable for sports car fans – and I'd have to say that even we were a little surprised at how quickly the first Toyota sports car in more than 20 years ignited the market,” he said.
“At the new price, GR Yaris continues to have a significant price advantage over equivalent performance cars costing more than $50,000.
“It also remains keenly competitive against conventional hot hatches, while having a decided performance advantage.”
Developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing and Toyota's title-winning WRC team, Tommi Mäkinen Racing, the Toyota GR Yaris will be joined in Australia next year by a special-edition Rallye version, pricing for which is yet to be announced.
Even at $50K, the pint-size hot hatch brings giant-killing performance thanks to a 200kW/370Nm 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine matched to a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive.
Toyota says stock availability will vary across its retail network, so customers are encouraged to contact their preferred Toyota dealer to secure their car.
