Apple CarPlay will soon be capable of managing far more than replicating your iPhone functions, with the US tech giant set to expand the interface to control more of your car.
According to Bloomberg, Apple developers have embarked on a new project, bizarrely called 'IronHeart', that in the near future will see CarPlay adjust such settings as the climate control and electric seat adjustment.
To enable greater control, Apple will have to work closely with car-makers to 'unlock' functions.
As well as simply adjusting the climate control, CarPlay could soon pre-heat your cabin remotely, tell you how much charge or fuel you have left, or measure the temperature or humidity in or outside your vehicle.
Other improvements could also herald finetuning of your car's sound system, with the fade, balance and sound tuned through the app.
It's thought the main motivation for embedding more of a car's functions within the app is to avoid users having to cycle back through sub-menus on the move when they want to adjust functions not available through the app.
Broadening CarPlay's appeal will also help Apple keep pace with its main rival Google, which has already introduced its own Android Automotive operating system that's used in Volvo and Polestar models, as well as the new battery-powered Renault Megane E-Tech Electric SUV.
Some have suggested that broadening the CarPlay app could allow Apple to allow lucrative third-party apps to be introduced to its platform, although car-makers are expected to resist this move over fears of hacking.
