Aston Martin commemorates the year 1964 with whisky collaboration

The year 1964 represents a defining era for both car maker Aston Martin and British Whisky distiller Bowmore who have joined forces to create a special edition whisky.

James Bond might have to trade in his signature Dry Vodka Martini, shaken not stirred for the rare Black Bowmore DB5 1964 Single Malt Scotch Whisky instead.

Aston Martin and Bowmore Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky unveiled their first collaborative creation which sees the two brands meet at the single point of the year 1964. What is created is a rare single malt scotch whisky in a bottle designed to look like an Aston Martin DB5’s piston. Only 25 bottles of the Black Bowmore DB5 1964 will be available with each glass bottle handcrafted to capture the essence of the DB5’s piston which takes up to a week to create.

For Aston Martin, 1964 was the era of their most iconic car the Aston Martin DB5. It is now regarded as ‘the most famous car in the world’ with its strong connection to the world’s most celebrated secret agent. Aston Martin made its Bond debut in the 1964 film Goldfinger, starring Sean Connery.

On its debut, the DB5 represented a subtle but important evolution over its predecessor, the DB4 Series 5. The DB5 became much more of a sporting saloon which, combined with its styling, helped it to become one of the most loved sports cars of its generation. Sir David Brown, the then owner of Aston Martin Lagonda and also the man who gave his initials to the ‘DB’ name, said, "I believe it is the essential character of the DB5, and its ability to perform perfectly in all conditions, that makes this car so intensely satisfying to own." Decades later, the DB5 is still one of the most admired and desired cars in history.

For Bowmore, 1964 is one of the most significant points in the distillery’s 240-year history. The arrival of a new boiler saw the distillery enter the modern age of distilling as moving from coal fire to steam in heating the stills. It was the first distillation from this new boiler that produced the spirit which was to become the iconic Black Bowmore.

First distilled in 1964, over the years Black Bowmore has become one of the rarest and most sought-after single malt whiskies ever created. This latest release represents only the sixth bottling of this single malt ever.

The special exclusive Aston Martin edition Black Bowmore DB5 1964 will be available from late spring 2020 with a price of £50,000 ($91,000 AUD). This one is certainly not your average drink, mister Bond. This isn't the first time a prestige car brand has been paired with a whisky brand. BMW Australia and Tasmania’s award-winning distillery, Sullivans Cove released a bespoke whisky exclusively for new owners of the 8 Series.
