Aston Martin to launch electric sports car and SUV in 2025
British car-maker's chairman says first EVs could use Benz powertrainsAston Martin chairman Lawrence Stroll has confirmed the British car-maker will introduce a battery-powered SUV and electric sports car in 2025.
Quoted in the Financial Times, Stroll said the still-secret new Aston Martin SUV will be built at the same plant as the Aston Martin DBX in Wales, while the new sports car will be assembled at its Gaydon HQ.
Both, says Aston's owner, could use batteries and motors supplied by Mercedes-Benz, in the wake of the German car-maker upping its share in Aston Martin to 20 per cent.
Speaking to the FT, Stroll said: "We are way ahead of our rivals, and all because of our partnership with Mercedes."
The news Stroll is considering borrowing from Mercedes-Benz for its EVs follows earlier comments that powertrain sharing was a "reasonable cost situation".
It adds fuel to rumours that Aston Martin is about to scrap its in-house V6 twin-turbo hybrid, which was created for the upcoming Aston Martin Vanquish hypercar and mid-engine Vantage supercar.
Later this year, Aston Martin is expected to launch its first plug-in hybrid in the shape of an electrified Aston Martin DBX, which is rumoured to be fitted with a powertrain based on the Benz-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8.
The twin-turbo V8 plug-in was originally developed by Mercedes-AMG for its AMG GT 4-door and S 73 performance sedan.
According to reports, some Aston owners who have placed orders for the Vanquish have already been informed it has been re-engineered ahead of its launch in 2023.
Stroll neglected to spill the beans on full details of the first pure-electric Aston Martin models, but said the sports car would be a "front-engine version of a DB11/Vantage" and would be sold alongside "an SUV higher four-wheel drive one".
Both designs have yet to be finalised.
It's also not known if the battery-powered Astons will be based on Mercedes-Benz's latest EVA architecture that it has created for pure-electric cars.
Instead, the Canadian billionaire Aston Martin chairman and part-owner of its F1 team said that the upcoming zero-emissions models would have "our beautiful body, our suspension, our vehicle dynamics [and] our bespoke interiors”.
