Aston Martin Vanquish replacement named and teased

Second of three new mid-engined Aston Martin models to break over within two months

Aston Martin has released both the name and the first teaser image of its upcoming ‘Super GT’ -- the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera.

At the same time, the British sports car maker confirmed it will reveal the all-new model, which will follow the new DB11 and Vantage coupes, in the second quarter of this year (ie: by June).

Few other details are known about Aston Martin’s born-again DBS, whose Superleggera tag means ‘super light’ in Italian.

However, Aston Martin says the DBS Superleggera completes its plan to replace each of its existing two-door sports car models as part of its Second Century Plan, meaning the range-topping sports car will replace the Vantage.

“Sitting at the pinnacle of the sports car line-up, DBS Superleggera will feature the highest levels of performance, craftmanship and design,” said Aston.

That said, it will be the first of three all-new mid-engined models to come from Aston Martin, including an entry-level supercar to rival the Ferrari 488 and the range-topping Valkyrie hypercar.

Also on Aston’s to-do list are the DBX crossover and an all-electric Lagonda limousine and SUV, the latter two due by 2021 and 2023 respectively.

First used in 1967 for original William Towns-designed model, the DBS nameplate has been a key part of Aston Martin’s heritage for more than 50 years.

It was resurrected in 2007 for Aston Martin’s then range-topping model, designed by current Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman.

“When you hear the name DBS Superleggera, you know what it is,” said Reichman.

“It’s the definitive Aston Martin Super GT. It’s an icon, a statement and this one will be no different.

“We’ve pushed the boundaries of performance and design to give this car a distinct character and ensure it’s worthy of the heritage and weight that this name carries”.

Expect the new Aston Martin DBS Superleggera to be released globally in 2019, before the ‘baby-Valkyrie’ supercar, which is being developed with the help of the Red Bull Racing F1 team and Daniel Ricciardo, arrives around 2020.

Meantime, up to four right-hand drive examples of the limited-edition, multi-million-dollar Valkyrie hypercar are due to be delivered Down Under after production begins this year.
