Aston Martin's Ford years under the microscope
A new book concentrates on an important -- but as yet unremarked -- period in the history of Britain's most famous sports car manufacturer extantMention Aston Martin and the cognoscenti immediately recall the Bond DB5 or Roger Moore's DBS in TV show 'The Persuaders'.
Those less enamoured of the visual arts will remember Le Mans winners or the acutely styled Lagonda sedan from the mid seventies.
As yet, the period from 1987 when Ford acquired the company is still too recent to be regarded with the nostalgic patina afforded 'classic' years. Make no mistake though, that will change in the near future.
David Dowsey, a regular contributor to the Carsales Network, has written a book concerning Aston Martin's soon-to-be-future-glorious-history years under the Ford umbrella -- pardon the Borat-like appellation.
The book is titled 'Aston Martin: Power, Beauty and Soul' and treats the subject matter with the respect it deserves; Dowsey having interviewed many people in formerly secret projects undertaken on behalf of rich recluses.
In the book, Dowsey provides comprehensive specifications on 64 of the company's cars built during the twenty-year period, including those cars built to special order, and provides artist's illustrations to accompany the text.
Since Prodrive took control of the company from Ford earlier this year, this 'culture clash' period is now officially a part of Aston Martin's history and with the company on a sound financial footing, the future looks bright.
