Audi will this week launch its latest A4 range in Australia with a reassuring five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program.
The fifth-generation A4 sedan has already received top marks in European NCAP testing, the result highlighting the model’s many passive and active safety features.
ANCAP praised in particular the A4’s “innovative safety features", echoing the sentiments of its European counterparts.
In November last year, Euro NCAP awarded the new A4 its 'advanced special award' for its standard-fit active safety system multi-collision brake assist and pre-sense technology.
Audi’s multi-collision brake assist system automatically brakes the vehicle in the event of an accident, reducing the danger of skidding as well as the risk of further collisions. The pre sense basic system tightens the seat belt in hazardous situations leading up to a collision and closes the windows and sunroof.
Speaking on behalf of ANCAP, CEO James Goodwin said: “The A4 performed well in crash testing and it features a long list of safety equipment that customers in this segment expect as standard, including three types of autonomous braking -- City, Interurban and Vulnerable Road User.
“The Audi is also fitted with impressive technology known as Exit Warning which scans the road or footpath and warns the occupants of the car of approaching traffic, such as cars and cyclists, and lets people know when it’s safe to open the door.
“This is the first time we have included ‘Exit Warning’ on our data sheet and it’s hoped that technology like this will help reduce the number of ‘dooring’ incidents to cyclists.
“We would have liked to see the A4 achieve a ‘good’ pedestrian rating, however the addition of an ‘active bonnet’ has decreased the risk to pedestrians and it carries an ‘acceptable’ rating,” he concluded.
The new Audi A4 will go on sale locally later this week, priced from $55,500.
