The rising tide of four-door luxury coupes is about to get its biggest wave yet, with senior Audi sources confirming it is working on an A9.
With the mixed reviews of its swoopy A7
(pictured) still ringing in its ears, insiders confirmed the brand is looking to stretch the concept even further.
Based around the aluminium space-frame architecture of last year's all-new A8, the A9 will arrive on sale around 2012-2013.
In the style of both the successful A5 Sportback and the A7, the A9 will be a dedicated four seater, though it is likely to have the option of a bench rear seat.
Powered by a V8 petrol engine, the A9 will also eschew Audi's new eight-speed automatic and, instead, use a new double-clutch gearbox.
It will also use Audi's breakthrough new processing computer, which debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, to provide a 3D head-up display and a much-faster, more-accurate MMI system.
