Audi has announced its most fuel-efficient production car ever among a series of drivetrain updates for its compact A3 for MY15.
The A3 1.6 TDI Ultra’s 81kW/250Nm oiler is rated at 3.2L/100km on the combined cycle, emitting just 85g/km CO2 – a dramatic improvement over the existing 77kW/250Nm 1.6-litre TDI’s 3.9L/100km and 102g CO2 – and even the 3.8L/100km and 99g of the smaller A1 1.6 TDI.
The figures match parent company Volkswagen’s recently announced MY15 Golf BlueMotion.
The company attributes the improvements to a weight-loss program paring 75kg from the existing car’s 1280 to just 1205kg.
Asked if the Ultra will make it Down Under, Audi Australia spokesman Shaun Cleary says the local arm is looking at it, but no decision has yet been made. “We’ve only just launched the new A3. But it’s under consideration for Australia.”
Alongside the Ultra, Audi has announced a more powerful 135kW tune of the 2.0-litre TDI, to become available alongside the existing 110kW engine. In six-speed manual form, the upgrade pushes the A3 from 0-100km/h in 7.3 seconds while still sipping just 4.1L/100km combined and emitting 108g/km CO2.
Mr Cleary told motoring.com.au the company has no current plans to bring the higher output oiler to Australia. “The option was available to us initially, but the 110kW TDI engine we took still gives us the most powerful diesel in the segment while allowing us to compete from a stronger price position.”
