Audi’s first all-electric SUV will be shown as a concept car at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
Conceived to take on the Tesla Model X and get out in front of rivals from Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, the ground-breaking SUV will stray from the conservative Audi styling themes of recent years with its own new design language, according to sources.
Audi’s board member for technical development, Professor Ulrich Hackenberg, admitted at the Consumer Electronics Show Asia that the “sports activity vehicle” would be on sale in 2018.
He also warned the zero-emissions SUV, likely to be dubbed 'Q6', will wear radical energy-saving aerodynamics and offer a driving range beyond 500km.
The Q6 will be based around the Volkswagen Group’s MLB modular platform, which is already used by the new Q7, and its bodywork and chassis architecture could also spawn plug-in diesel-electric hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell versions.
