Audi's tiny SUV, the Q3, will go into production at a Seat plant at Martorell in Spain. Production of up to 80,000 units per year will commence from 2011. The concept car was unveiled in 2006, so it has been a long wait for production reality to eventuate.
As recently as the local launch of the Q5, Audi Australia's MD, Joerg Hofmann was cagey about the timing and even the likelihood of the Q3 entering production.
"It makes sense that if you have a Q7 [model] and a Q5..." was all he would say by way of verifying that the smallest Audi SUV would go into production.
Audi is investing the equivalent of AUD$500 million in the Spanish plant to build the Q3. An option to build the Q3 in the USA as well has been suspended in the current financial situation.
Expect some Tiguan DNA in the Q3, which should arrive here about 12 months after the BMW X1 (more here).
