Audi could launch both a new Mercedes-Maybach and S-Class coupe rival based on its next-generation all-aluminium A8 limousine, it has been revealed.
Currently, the German car-maker only offers regular-wheelbase and long-wheelbase versions of the A8 luxury sedan, but that is set to change following the success of Mercedes-Maybach and Pullman versions of the S-Class in markets like the US and China, according to new reports.
Speaking to British mag Auto Express at the recent launch of the SQ7 SUV, Audi’s technical new boss Dr Stefan Knirsch announced Audi was plotting new derivatives of its A8.
“We are thinking about it.
“The success of the extra-long version of the S-Class has got us wondering about whether there could be a business case for that in the future.”
As well as longer versions of the A8, it’s believed Audi is also considering an all-new coupe and even a convertible too, following Benz’s decision to expand its S-Class range to six vehicles, most recently launching a convertible version based on its big S-Class Coupe.
Fuelling rumours is the German car-maker's unusual decision to create an extra-long six-door A8 limousine.
Said to have been commissioned by a wealthy customer as a one-off, the XLWB Audi is now seen as a valuable publicity tool to gauge customer response for an even bigger, more expensive version of the A8.
Knirsch also confirmed the next-gen A8 will come with far greater levels of autonomous driving aids but refused to confirm whether or not there would ever be an RS version of the flagship limo.
