Several Audi product planners have denied all knowledge of the much-rumoured Q1 mini prestige SUV.
The model has been reported by several publications as being launch-ready for as early as 2016, some even saying that a plug-in hybrid version will follow in 2018.
It is believed the Q1 will measure as little as 3800mm in length and will be a front-wheel drive only proposition. The model would join an influx of similarly-sized models launched by other brands in recent times – albeit with a prestige tilt – including the Holden Trax, Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur and Ford EcoSport.
German publication AutoBild has even gone so far as to list engine selections for Ingolstadt's new baby SUV. The outlet says that much like the A1 on which it is allegedly based, the Q1 would offer a choice of 1.4 TFSI (petrol) and 1.4 TDI (diesel) engines, both producing 67kW and both offered as standard with a seven-speed S tronic (dual-clutch) transmission.
The magazine also added that the Q1 range will be topped by a 172kW SQ1 variant powered by a 2.0 TFSI engine, while the plug-in hybrid model would combine an 82kW 1.2 -litre petrol engine with an 81kW electric motor.
But according to product planners attending the 2013 Audi Alpine Tour there is no internal communique to support the existence of a sub-Q3 SUV. It was a sentiment echoed by Audi Australia's general manager of corporate communications, Anna Burgdorf, who told motoring.com.au: "There is no official confirmation of these kinds of models, however, you can be sure that Audi will continue to develop and introduce interesting new models in the future that will continue to excite our customers."
"Our goal is to lead the premium segment and our strong product focus is a key ingredient in reaching that goal."
If the model does come to production, AutoBild estimates it will have a sale price from 20,000 Euros.
