Redesigned Audi A1's new MMI touch display set to banish yet more buttons and reduce distracted drivingAudi has posted a short clip of its next-generation A1 hatchback's new infotainment system as the brand gears up for the supermini's international launch in Barcelona in a few weeks' time.
The brand has also ditched the three-door model; the new 2019 Audi A1 will be offered exclusively as a five-door model going forward.
From our brief glimpse of the MINI rival's interior, it appears the German car-maker could lead the class for quality and technology with the new 2019 Audi A1.
Note the chromed bevelled dials for the climate control and the metallic dash covering -- finishes not usually found in the supermini segment -- and the new infotainment system looks as though it's aimed squarely at a millennial audience.
The new infotainment system, dubbed MMI Touch, is set to replace the typical touchpad with a touch-screen that features an 'Epic Mode'. It allows users to sketch on the screen or, in this instance, doodle the place name where the 2019 Audi A1 will be launched.
Ridding the Audi A1 cabin of a secondary touchpad to control the sat-nav and other functions will help Audi succeed in simplifying the interior, cutting the number of buttons in an attempt to reduce driver distraction on the move.
Likely to incorporate both gesture control and be capable of understanding natural voice commands, the new Audi A1 will benefit from tech lifted direct from the A8 limousine and new 2019 Audi A6.
This includes an instrument panel that will feature the latest 'virtual cockpit' customisable digital display.
Based on Volkswagen Group's latest MQB AO platform, the new Audi A1 will be both lighter and stiffer than the current car, and available with both front- and all-wheel drive.
Under the bonnet there will be the choice of a turbocharged range of engines that will include a little 1.0-litre three-cylinder, a larger 1.5-litre four-cylinder and a punchy 2.0-litre unit with 230kW that will power the next-gen Audi S1.
Set to feature chunkier styling and a more aggressive front-end design, Ingolstadt hopes its next-gen A1 will pack more visual clout despite its diminutive dimensions.
On sale in Europe later this year, the A1 is expected to arrive in Australia during the first half of 2019.
