Audi Sport factory gun Christopher Mies was the dominant driver in the last free practice at this weekend’s Bathurst 12 Hour. The Euro driver posted four of the six best times in the session, the last free practice ahead of qualifying.
Mies fastest time was just before the session was red-flagged -- a 2m 03.500s lap to take over from Warren Luff (#11 Objective Racing McLaren 650S) which held the spot for much of the session.
The final red-flag was thrown after former winner Katsumasa Chiyo ripped a wheel from the #23 Nissan Motorsport Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3. The damage aoccured after kissing the wall at the right-hander between the Coates Hire Essess and the Sparesbox Dipper with eight minutes to go.
That’s the second of the team's GT-R damaged. Florian Strauss crashed the carsales.com.au supported #24 GT-R near Reid Park yesterday but the team was able to repair the car overnight.
The session was first red-flagged after just seven minutes after a R Motorsport Aston Martin V8 Vantage crashed near the end of Audi Mountain Straight.
Green flag running resumed nine minutes later at 8.16am and just minutes after the resumption Mies bettered his already fastest time to 2m 04.525s before again improving on the very next lap to 2m 04.310s.
It would stand for only a moment, however, with Luff following up with the first ‘three’ for the session – a 2m 03.864s set with 40 minutes remaining. Luff would hold the top spot until what would be the last minutes of the session, when Mies set the fastest lap.
The Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour action continues at Mt Panorama all weekend with the first qualifying session to finish at 11.40am.
