Audi prices its first S3 sedan

Four-door S3 to cost more than five-door Sportback at $62,200

Audi has confirmed a $62,200 pricetag (plus on-road costs) for its all-new S3 sedan, first deliveries of which will take place later this month.

In line with the rest of the A3 line-up, the first ever S3 four-door will therefore cost $2300 more than the latest five-door S3 Sportback hatch, which went on sale in December priced from $59,900.

However, like the hatch, the booted S3 undercuts the price of its small sports sedan rivals – in this case the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 Sport ($64,900 plus ORCs) and the CLA 45 AMG ($86,900 plus ORCs).

Audi is also expected to deliver a more direct competitor for the latter, in the form of the RS 3 sedan (based on the new RS 3 hatch due to be revealed at October’s Paris motor show), but for now the S3 sedan shares its powertrain and equipment list with the S3 Sportback.

That means a turbocharged direct-injection 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol (2.0 TFSI) engine that, together with a six-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive as standard (no manual version of either S3 model is available here), outputs 206kW/380Nm, consumes 6.9L/100km and accelerates the S3 sedan to 100km/h in five seconds.

Like the S3 Sportback, with which it shares no body panels, the S3 sedan sits 25mm lower than the A3 on which it’s based. However, its boot space increases from 380 to 425 litres and Audi claims it’s the lightest vehicle in the sports sedan segment at 1450kg – 20kg more than the hatch.

Standard features include xenon plus headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED tail-lights, Audi parking system plus including automated parking, reversing camera and front/rear sensors, 18-inch alloy wheels, S sports suspension, quad exhaust outlets and an S-specific body kit.

Inside, there’s MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch, fine Nappa leather trim, heated and powered front S sports seats, Audi Music Interface with Bluetooth interface with music streaming, dual-zone climate-control with digital display and rear air-vents, push-button starting and a leather-wrapped, multi-function flat-bottom steering wheel.

For a further $4990, Audi is also offering an S performance package for the S3 sedan, comprising LED headlights, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, Audi magnetic ride control, S sports seats in fine Nappa leather with diamond stitching, 19-inch alloy wheels and red S brake callipers.

The S3 Cabriolet will complete Audi’s new S3 line-up here in October.
