Audi releases Australia's fastest diesel

Audi's high-performance, high-economy A6 and A7 3.0 TDI Biturbo diesels land in Oz

Audi Australia has revealed the pricing of its performance-oriented A6 and A7 3.0 TDI Biturbo variants, both of which go on sale from today.

The A6 3.0 TDI Biturbo sedan enters the Australian market with an asking price of $118,800 (plus on-road costs), while the A7 3.0 TDI Biturbo Sportback retails from $148,600 (plus ORCs).

The introduction of the range-topping Biturbo variants brings with it price reductions for downstream existing A6 sedan and A7 Sportback models to achieve what Audi Australia says is “an extension of the range at its upper level” (see chart below).

Audi says the new A6 and A7 models will provide it with an opportunity to draw new customers to the brand while at the same time growing its diesel sales leadership.

“With the Biturbo coming in, we hope that this will increase it further,” said Audi Australia product planner, Jacqueline Waldon, referring to Audi’s share of diesel-powered models within its existing line-up.

“Obviously we’ll look at the structure [of the A6/A7 model portfolio] but customers will probably move from the 3.0 TFSI petrol or move up from the current 3.0 TDI.

“We’ve put some elements of structure in place there to allow the Biturbo in [to the A6 and A7 line-up], which we think will help us actually gain new customers as well.

“We have reduced the prices [which has] opened up that middle section, because we wanted the Biturbo at such a good price to bring it in to the market.”

Currently, diesel-powered models account for 43 per cent the brand’s Australian sales - a 42 per cent increase since 2003. For the A6 alone the figures show a split of 58:42 in favour of diesel-powered models, up from just nine per cent in 2004.

The high-performance additions to Audi’s diesel portfolio will be further bolstered in April when the new SQ5 3.0 TDI Biturbo SUV joins the local line-up. The high-output diesel SUV is expected to retail from under $100,000.

The A6 sedan and A7 Sportback models each share a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged (biturbo) V6 producing 250kW and 650Nm. In the case of the A6 these figures equate to a staggering 5.1-second 0-100km/h time.

That makes the A6 3.0 TDI Biturbo the fastest accelerating diesel-powered car in Australia.

Not to be outdone, the A7 3.0 TDI Biturbo Sportback hits triple digits in a mere 5.3 seconds.

The figures represent a 50kW/70Nm increase over the single-turbo 3.0 TDI on offer currently, and despite of these lofty performance figures Audi says its Biturbo twins are impressively efficient.

Each achieves a combined cycle fuel economy average of 6.4L/100km while emitting 169g/km of CO2, which sees both models slot in well beneath the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold of 7.0L/100km.
