Audi S3 Sportback for an STi price

Sub-$60K price places Subaru and Mitsu's Evo square in Audi's target sights
Audi has caught turbo hot-hatch buyers by surprise, offering its new S3 Sportback at a price just below the Subaru STi.
Announcing a price of $59,900 for the new model provides the importer with some leverage in the market place. That's $90 less than the MLP (Manufacturer's List Price) for the Subaru and over $2000 less than the similarly specified Mitsubishi Lancer Evo with dual-clutch transmission. It's a coup for the prestige brand, expanding the demographic for the five-door S3 by going head to head with the two Japanese brands in this market sector below $60,000.
The S3 Sportback, due to go on sale here in December, is based on Volkswagen's new MQB platform and pumps out 206kW and 380Nm for a 0-100km/h time of 5.0 seconds. A weight reduction of 70kg contributes to both the car's straight-line performance and its combined-cycle fuel-consumption figure of 6.9L/100km. The quattro all-wheel drive system allows the Audi to match its Japanese rivals for cornering grip. As standard, the S3 Sportback will be sold in Australia with a six-speed S tronic (dual-clutch) transmission.
“The new S3 Sportback sets a benchmark for compact premium performance – it is a sensational package,” said Audi Australia Managing Director Andrew Doyle.
“Not only does the new S3 Sportback deliver exceptional performance, but it is equipped with all the sophisticated features expected in a luxury vehicle. This car will change the way enthusiasts view the premium ‘hot hatch’ market. Our positioning for this third-generation S3 Sportback makes progressive performance more accessible than ever before.”
Standard equipment for the S3 Sportback will include xenon plus headlights, MMI Navigation plus, front/rear parking sensors, reversing camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, body kit, quad-pipe exhaust, uprated suspension, Nappa leather trim for heated front sports seats, Bluetooth with music streaming, dual-zone climate control and a leather-bound flat-bottomed steering wheel.
Audi is also offering buyers an S performance package as an extra-cost option for $4990. This pack combines LED headlights, B&O audio, magnetic ride system, upgraded sports seats, exclusive design of 18-inch alloys, red brake callipers front and rear.
Local deliveries of the S3 Sportback are set to commence in December, but Audi is officially taking orders now.
