The Audi SQ2 is finally about to land in Australia, and the long-awaited rival for the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 and BMW X2 M35i is sure to make its presence felt with a starting price of $64,400 plus on-road costs.
Armed with a 221kW/400Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, the 2021 Audi SQ2 is positioned miles below the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35, which starts at $83,700 plus ORCs and has a comparable 225kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo.
The SQ2 even undercuts the lower-output, $66,900 GLA 250 (165kW/350Nm).
When it hits showrooms in May, the 2021 Audi SQ2 will also be more affordable than the BMW X2 M35i, which has more muscle with a 225kW/450Nm 2.0-litre turbo and is listed at $73,900 plus ORCs. A Pure variant is also available, from $68,900.
The SQ2 has been on sale in Europe for a few years, with Audi Australia taking the updated version that was revealed in November 2020.
The 2.0 TFSI engine in the high-performance small SUV drives through a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system, sending it from 0-100km/h in a claimed 4.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 250km/h.
Australian-spec models will be fitted with 19-inch alloy wheels and Matrix LED headlights with dynamic indicators/light sequences and high beam assist.
The SQ2’s body kit, red brake callipers and quad tailpipes are also designed to “add extra visual intent”, says Audi.
Cabin highlights will include nappa leather front sports seats with diamond-patterned stitching, S embossing and contrasting colours, while the driver grips an S sport leather-clad steering wheel and is presented with a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit with S-specific display.
Other headline items include 10-colour ambient interior lighting and a 705W Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.
Expect a high level of advanced driver assist safety systems as well, including Audi’s latest autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and adaptive cruise control systems.
There will be nine exterior colours and two interior colour combinations available.
“The Audi S3 has a revered place in Australian performance car folklore,” said Audi Australia chief Paul Sansom.
“Its combination of agility, energetic performance, versatility and price positioning place it within reach of many enthusiasts – such is its proven popularity over the years.
“In line with a general shift towards SUVs in Australia, including performance models, the Audi SQ2 arrives with substantial opportunity.
“We’re confident that its combination of pace and poise will see it emulate the success of other iconic S models throughout the Audi range.”
