Audi hints at a wild new EV sports car

Audi has released a teaser to build anticipation for an all-new battery-electric sports car it is readying to replace both the TT and the R8 supercar. Due to be unleashed September 8 at the Munich motor show, it will be twinned with the inbound Porsche Boxster EV.

Audi has yet to reveal full details of the all-new coupe and roadster that will be twinned with the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman replacements, but the new sports cars are expected to share both platform and powertrain.

Releasing a clip that taps into Audi's rich motorsport history and pedigree of rolling out jaw-dropping designs like the Avus concept and the TT, it's been heavily tipped that the new EV will inhabit a space between the TT and R8 supercar.

When it arrives, expect power to exceed 400kW and for the Audi to shun the twin e-motor rear-drive versions that will be offered by Porsche for a dual-motor all-wheel drive version befitting of its quattro legacy.

Also expect Audi to offer its next-generation agility-boosting torque vectoring to offset a kerb weight above 1900kg.

Fast-charging will be 800-volt, while a new battery should deliver a range of around 600km and a 15 minute 10-80 per cent top-up.

Inside, the cabin should pay homage to both the original TT and R8, with plenty of aluminium on show. That could also signal an entire body formed using the lightweight metal.

More will be revealed in the build-up to the new Audi's unwrapping ceremony in Munich.

The battery-powered Audi TT and R8 will wow with its looks, stun with its tech and reward behind the wheel, thanks to the huge investment Porsche has spent developing its much-delayed Boxster and Cayman replacement.

But whether there's a market for small, fast all-electric sports cars badged either Audi or Porsche remains to be seen.
