Aussie Clenergy Team Arrow to make solar car
Queensland-based racing outfit hope to make the world’s first true commercial solar vehicleThe makers of the world's fastest solar-powered race car, Clenergy Team Arrow, have set their sights on making the world's first road-registerable solar-powered vehicle.
The Queensland-based racing team, along with support from the Queensland state government, is in the process of building the first prototype of its commercial vehicle. The prototype will take part in next year’s World Solar Challenge as well as forming the basis for the road car.
“There have been cars registered like this before, but this will be the first one designed from day one to be a road-registered vehicle,” Clenergy Team Arrow founder, Cameron Tuesley, told the ABC yesterday.
Tuesley explained that although there have technically been other registered solar vehicles, that these had exploited loopholes in order to be registered, often as a buggy or farm equipment.
Tuesley added that his team's car “has been designed in conjunction with specialists from the Department of Transport from day one, and it’s going to be road-registered.”
According to Clenergy Team Arrow's website, the car will be capable of 300-400km range at highway speeds and over 1000km in urban operation.
Unlike the previous single-seat racecar made by the racing team, the road car will have seating for two, a boot, a bonnet and potentially even air-conditioning.
The solar powered car will likely cost customer around the vicinity of $250,000 (plus on-road costs), Clenergy Team Arrow confirming they have already taken customer orders.
