Special-editions of the new Polestar 2 developed in and for Australia are being considered as a way to promote the electric sportback as a performance vehicle.
The Australian division of Swedish-Chinese EV specialist wants to promote the freshly updated Model Year 2024 Polestar 2’s increased power and torque and the swap of the two Single Motor models from front-wheel drive to the rear-wheel drive layout favoured by enthusiasts.
The two Dual Motor all-wheel drive Polestar 2 models have also boosted drivetrain performance, made their AWD system more rear biased and introduced a front motor disconnect.
Prices have gone up across the range, which officially goes on sale today, August 25.
In Europe, a limited-edition pre-facelift Polestar 2 called the BST 270 launched in 2022 and the BST 230 rolled out in 2023.
Speaking at this week’s media launch of the updated MY24 Polestar 2 in Canberra, Polestar Automotive Australia managing director Samantha Johnson indicated plans for a local solution were cooking in the background.
“There are some things we are working on locally so we will announce them as we go along,” confirmed Johnson.
“It’s not the BST because that’s small batch volumes and they weren’t coming to Australia.
“But we might look at some things that we do locally. We will announce that in the future if and when.
“At the moment there is nothing definite.”
Promotion of the Polestar 2 as a performance vehicle makes sense in Australia where premium brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi all benefit from strong sales of their respective AMG, M and Audi Sport divisions.
Mercedes-AMG’s share of the Benz line-up’s total sales in Australia is traditionally amongst the highest in the world.
Johnson emphasised the increased appeal the MY24 Polestar 2 had for premium brand buyers, thanks to its layout change and performance bump. She even cited personal experience as evidence.
“It’s really a big step forward for us,” she said. “The Polestar 2 is a performance car, especially the Model Year 24.
“It’s for those who want a performance sedan … if you really want the dynamics of that type of car that’s going to attract those people from Audi, BMW, Mercedes who are really looking for that performance.
“I get a lot of Audi drivers, BMW drivers, Mercedes drivers and even Porsche drivers as well who try to race you at the lights and they come up and ask about it.
“There is huge interest there.”
