Aussie pricing for Porsche Cayman S announced

Porsche has announced the price sportscar enthusiasts will have to pay to play when the Boxster-based Cayman S arrives in early 2006.

Porsche Cars Australia has announced the new mid-engined Cayman S will retail from $148,500 when sales commence in the first quarter of 2006. The announcement coincided with the official public unveiling of the Cayman S at the Frankfurt Motor Show early this week.

Porsche says the Cayman S "successfully combines practicality with performance to deliver an outstanding driving experience."

Powered by a newly-developed 217kW 3.4lt variable-valve-timing version of the horizontally-opposed six that powers both the Boxster and 911, the six-speed manual Cayman S accelerates from 0–100km/h in 5.4sec. Claimed top speed is 275km/h.

The five-speed Tiptronic S transmission will be available as on option.

Essentially a coupe version of the open Boxster, the Cayman S is fitted as standard with unique 18-inch wheels and tyres.

“Cayman S will bring new buyers to Porsche by offering exceptional performance, practicality and value,” said Porsche Cars Australia managing director, Michael Winkler.

The sub-$150K pricing for the Cayman S is seen as competitive by industry pundits. The soft-top Boxster S is current priced at $139,500 and Porsche's cheapest 911, the Carrera 3.6 is a touch over $203,000. By way of comparison, Mercedes SLK 55 AMG is listed at $161,900, while BMW's M3 Coupe is $137,900.
