If you're a gregarious type into 4WD adventure but not exactly a competitive racer, the 2009 Australian Adventure Tour could have something for you. The tour will be run in Western Australia at the same time as the 22nd annual Australasian Safari.
The Adventure Tour event starts on Sunday August 2 at approximately the same time as the Safari and is open to all road registered 4WDs. It is an eight-day tour comprising seven legs with individual leg distances averaging around 250km to 400km on a mixture of unsealed and sealed roads. Each leg will join a section of the actual race route along the way and then divert to a privileged viewing point to watch the competitors come through.
The tour will be conducted at an easily achievable pace directed by experienced guides up front, with a sweep vehicle following up the rear.
Participating drivers wishing to take it easier on certain stages will also have the opportunity to "drive 'n rest" from point to point on main roads, meeting up with the rest of the field at the end of the day.
Tour participants will stay each night at Safari Villages along with Australasian Safari competitors to partake in the atmosphere of the event.
According to the organisers, the driving sections will cater for less experienced drivers while also giving those with more experience the opportunity to exercise their skills safely under the control of the tour guides.
Interested participants can book here by submitting the appropriate expression of interest form and paying the relevant deposit.
