The Australian Racing Drivers’ Club (ARDC) has revealed it will join with the Australian Drifting Grand Prix (ADGP) to run the Sydney Motorsport Park Drift Festival on the 26th of January.
It's the first occasion drifting has made it to the Sydney Motorsport Park, formerly Eastern Creek. And the event, which is set to last almost 12 hours, will feature the ADGP Top-16 invitational exhibition competition held in the final hours of daylight on the South Circuit.
ADGP manager, Andrew Hawkins, anticipates the venue should quickly establish itself as the home of drifting in NSW in the afterglow of the Australia Day holiday event.
“There will be over 150 entry places available, for everyone from beginner through to pro,” said Mr Hawkins. “It's all about celebrating the sport of drifting!”
“We are very excited to be part of this historic moment as preliminary testing of the South Circuit revealed it to be one of the most suited and enjoyable tracks in Australia for drifting, and its use will help expand the sport in NSW.”
There are three drift clubs in NSW and each will be offered the opportunity to lay rubber on the South Circuit first. The Skidpan and Figure-8 'Peanut' track will be open all day to anyone. Over 150 cars are expected to take part in the day's activities.
Participation in the ADGP Top-16 invitational exhibition round will be by invitation only, with practice and qualifying to take place during the day, ahead of the competition commencement at 6pm. The ADGP expects the exhibition at the Drift Festival to pave the way for a fully recognised championship round during the 2013-14 season.
“National level drift competition has not had a presence in NSW for many years, and we are very pleased to be able to facilitate their return,” said Glenn Matthews, ARDC CEO.
“The Sydney Motorsport Park Drift Festival marks the beginning of a new Drift program, with a NSW State Championship planned for 2013 as well.”
