Melbourne based Donington Auctions has launched their latest online car collectors auction which features the passion collection of 74 year old Bill Ahearn which features some good condition classic model cars.
Bill's love of motorsport and all things automotive first started when he was 13 years old. He can still vividly remember attending his first race meeting in 1966 for the International 99 event where he got to see his childhood heroes battling it out on the track before his own eyes. Legends of he racing world including Brabham, Hulme, Hill, Courage and the Geoghegan brothers all came to influence Bill’s love of motorsport. Bill started collecting model cars around 1975 "I grew from there, with at one stage I had over 5000 diecast models of all different scales, I really never had real favourites at the start but later on I got a real penchant for Fire and Rescue Vehicles and Trucks however basically, I bought what appealed to me."
While Bill's passion was mainly for diecast models, he also had some 1/1 scale cars, as well as a few classic cars in his own garage, owning nearly 50 cars over his life. 74 years old now, Bill still avidly follows and travels to Supercars Championship races and historic vehicle displays around Australia. "I guess it never really gets out of the blood”.
Bill has decided to part way with over 150 of his collectible model cars which are now up online for auction this weekend with starting bids at $5. With a heavy presence of Australian motorsport history with a few classic internationals thrown in for good measure, Bill’s passion collection has something for every young and old model car collector. Our personal favourites include a 1:18 scale BMW 3.5 CSL, Ford Sierra RS 500 as raced by Brock/Rouse 1989 Tooheys 1000 Bathurst and a boxed set by Corgi for 'The Italian Job' containing three Mini Coopers.
While you’re on the site, have a look around and you will be find some collectible gems of former race cars from world famous race series including a 1987 Penske PC16 Indycar. The Penske PC 16 was developed for the 1987 Indy Car World Series season and raced at several events driven by four-time Indy 500 winner Rick Mears. While this car has no engine, it would still make a fantastic addition to a collection or just as a piece of unique furniture for your living room.
The online auction opens Friday 10th July 2020 at 10am and will run through to Sunday 19th July 2020. To start your collection or to just ogle at some classics head to doningtonauctions.com.au
