Australian Safari reaches a 'century'

Over a hundred competitors will be taking part in this year's West Australian event

The start is still three weeks away, but the Australian Safari for 2007 has already attracted 103 competitors.

An amazing 82 of those starters are bike-mounted.

Bikes and cars will traverse 5500km of competitive stages from the start on August 24 at Kununurra to the finish in Perth on September 1.

Commenting on the mix of experience among the competitors, Event Director, Justin Hunt said "PWR Holden Rally Team competitor, John Hederiks, is back to defend his auto title. Adrian Channing and David Schwarz, who finished second and third in the bikes last time, are also back and will be hoping they can move up on the podium this time.

"But the fact that we now have a new course in a totally different part of the country means the winners really could come from anywhere."

Mr Hunt believes that the turn-out bodes well for future events.

"To get this level of take-up in year one is a bonus. It gives us a great base to build on for future years. We’re very confident that once people know how good the course is, hear the stories and see the vision, many more will turn up in future years."
