Australia's Best Cars: People-movers dip out

The winners of Australia's Best Cars 2013 have been announced but people-movers fail to pass muster

The winners of the Australian Automobile Association’s Australia’s Best Cars 2013 awards have been announced but the category of People Mover has gone unclaimed, with the AAA stating there wasn’t a single contender for the class that was up to scratch.

The AAA’s chief executive, Andrew McKellar, said the scratching was a disappointment.

“This is the first time in 13 years of the programme that an award has been withheld and it’s unfortunate that not one vehicle in that class meets the expectations of an Australia’s Best Car,” he said.

“I urge all brands not to let down any segment of the community and suggest they need to reassess the affordability and safety performance of their people mover vehicles,” he added.

The 2013 awards adopted several changes, including the use of indicative ‘drive-away’ pricing in the affordability assessment, a new category of 4x4 Dual Cab Utilities, and tougher safety ratings criteria. Any winning vehicle must have a five-star ANCAP rating or, if not yet tested, be eligible for a five-star rating.

Some of the winners of the Australia's Best Car 2013 included the Holden Commodore SV6 for the best large car under $60,000, while the Renault Clio Expression TCe 120 took out the best light car award.
